DANNY SIMPSON wants to create some better memories for Newcastle United fans when it comes to the FA Cup.

The 23-year-old's earliest recollection of the competition is a painful one for the Toon Army, with Simpson turning the clock back to 1999 and the day that Manchester United brushed aside Ruud Gullit's United in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Those memories at least are vivid, but Simpson can't recall a horrendous miss from Croatian Silvio Maric who squandered the chance to offer the Mags the goal they craved at the tunnel end of the old stadium.

Simpson told the Chronicle: I can''t remember that miss - I was only young then!

"I shouldn't really say it, but the first thing I remember was Man United against Newcastle, when Teddy Sheringham scored.

"But I also remember Newcastle getting to cup finals then and exactly what the competition means to the fans.

"It's special, it's the FA Cup and nothing more needs to be said, does it? "I'm as keen as anybody to do well in the competition, the aim is to give the fans some fond memories if we can."

After the postponement of the clash with Reading at the weekend, the Plymouth replay has turned into a welcome fixture for the Mags, who want to go into the Championship collision with West Brom on Monday firing on all cylinders. …
