DANNY SIMPSON has revealed he will be glad to finally become a fully-fledged Newcastle United player, with a deal for the Manchester United defender imminent.

Chris Hughton has been keeping his cards close to his chest since the January transfer window opened for business at the start of the month.

But the Chronicle understands that United have been putting the final touches to the Simpson deal in the last couple of days.

The addition of Simpson, who is out of contract at the end of the season with Man U, would be deemed a success story in the transfer window for United after moves for Jermaine Beckford and Matt Kilgallon have stalled so far.

And it would kill off the threat of the Salford-born ace making the move to any of the clutch of sides who are also waiting in the wings should the deal collapse at the 11th hour. The 23-year-old is hoping to fulfil his wish of signing on a permanent deal, and his agent Paul Martin has been in constant dialogue to ensure the Gallowgate favourite finally secures his move.

The conclusion of the deal has been put on hold due to tonight's FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle, and Martin spent most of yesterday completing former United man Gary Caldwell's switch to Wigan Athletic.

Simpson could be a Newcastle player in time for Monday's game with West Brom, the day that his loan deal expires and he is due back at Old Trafford. …
