Cunningham Draft Kicks off Season

Article excerpt

HORSE power action kicks off for 2010 with the Cunningham Campdraft at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve this weekend.

Campdraft is a truly Australian sport and it seems most events have gone ahead in the past few years despite concerns about lack of cattle numbers in the drought.

Two Cloncurry families will be at Bony Mountain on the way to a stock horse sale in Tamworth.

For the first time, a $2000 juvenile campdraft is being held with sponsorship support from the Balfour family.

Other major sponsors are Maydan, Cameron and Hayley Turner, Bill and Melissa Kerr, David Schnitzerling and Austasia Feedlot Consultancy.

A lot of effort goes into breeding top horses for campdrafting and one only has to look at a few runs at the Warwick Rodeo or any country campdraft to see the quality of horses.

Leyburn Rodeo

THE Leyburn Rodeo is on from 6pm tonight at the Royal Hotel.

There are plenty of quality bull riders heading to the village for the three bull rides, including 2008 APRA bull riding champion David Kennedy, of Kyogle, who will jump on To Be Sure.

Goondiwindi bull rider Jim Rowsell, a placegetter at Warwick Rodeo a couple of years ago, is on Copper Top Diamond while Mitchell Duff, of Gunnedah, will attempt to make time on Hill Billy.

There will be plenty of Warwick area riders competing, including Scott Glasby on Diamond Time, Cameron Byrne on Time Warp, Anthony Collins on Blue Dog, Damian Clarke on Tough All Over and Ben Ruhle on Blue Dog Axe.

Steer riding star Lachlan Slade will contest the junior bull ride.

The big excitement of the night will be how rugby league stars Shane Webcke and Andrew Gee go in their celebrity rides.

Team penning

THIS column is almost becoming the team penning column; there have been three events in this relatively new sport in the past two months or so.

There was a Warwick Hack and Pony Club event at the Warwick Showgrounds, a showgirl fundraiser at Cambooya and now a competition at the Clifton Showgrounds organised by the Clifton Polocrosse Club for January 23-24. …
