LORIK Cana believes Sunderland's next few games will determine if their second half of the season will be a relegation battle or a push for the top half. But he feels the work done in the treatment room will have a bigger bearing than the transfer market, writes STUART RAYNER.

The Black Cats captain was "shocked" despite seeing Saturday's 7-2 capitulation at Chelsea as the culmination of a run of one win in 12 league games.

That has silenced the fanciful talk of European qualification and brought an uncomfortably familiar prospect into sight.

Yet even after such an embarrassing afternoon - personally and collectively - Cana's glass remained half-full.

He said: "We are not very far away from the relegation zone now, but we are also not very far away from the top ten.

"The next few matches will probably decide which direction we move in. We have to pick up points quickly.

"We are all shocked by what happened. We are all professionals and know we have to be better. …
