MP Angry at Decision to Close Tax Offices

THREE North East tax offices are to close, it has been confirmed.

The Journal reported in July 2008 that offices at Alnwick and Hexham were set to close following a review.

Now Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed the offices at Alnwick, Hexham and Bishop Auckland will close this year or next.

Discussions with staff have already resulted in some taking up posts at Newcastle and other offices, while others have left.

Ten or less staff at the Alnwick and Hexham offices are facing redundancy.

Public inquiry facilities from each of the offices are being retained within the towns, at either new or existing sites - with those at Hexham having already moved.

Last night, the closures were condemned by Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, whose constituency covers the Alnwick office.

Staff there had mounted a petition on the 10 Downing Street website opposing their relocation.

Workers at Hexham were similarly concerned at the prospect of having to commute to Newcastle. …
