MOVING home can be one of life's most stressful events. Whether you're leaving the family nest for the first time with your worldly belongings loaded into the boot, or you're moving into your dream home, relocating to a new environment can be an unsettling experience.

Here is a comprehensive checklist designed to keep you on task and in control during what should be one of the most exciting events in your life.

Four to six weeks before you move:

* As soon as you have a date of settlement and have confirmed when you want to move, book your removalist.

* If you have decided to call on family and friends to help you move rather than hiring a professional removalist, consider whether you will need to rent a utility or truck.

* Arrange to take leave from work.

* If you need storage, organise it now.

* Purchase packing boxes, tape, rope, newspapers, bubble wrap and marking pens.

* Check your insurance policy to make sure it covers your belongings during the move.

* You will also need to arrange insurance on your new premises.

* Make a list from all of your incoming mail and start notifying businesses and other contacts of your new address.

* Have a garage sale, organise a skip or arrange for a charity to collect your unwanted furniture.

Sell, give away or throw out anything you don't want to take to your new home.

* Start packing things that you won't use over the next few weeks.

* Keep an inventory of all packed items. Number each box to correspond with your inventory lists. Two weeks before you move:

* Arrange dates for disconnection and reconnection of gas, electricity, phone and cable television.

* Advise businesses of cancellation date for newspapers, gardening, cleaning and other regular services.

* Make arrangements for your pets and children on moving day. Ask a relative or friend to collect children from school or babysit younger ones. If you need to use the services of a boarding kennel for your pet - arrange this now.

* Make a list of the items you want the removalist to move and those that you'll be moving yourself. …
