A WARRANT has been issued for the arrest of a woman accused of fraud after she failed to turn up at court.

Emma Charlton had been due before a judge at Newcastle Crown Court for a plea and directions hearing on allegations centred on the claim she conned people into thinking she had terminal cancer.

Prosecutors allege she is responsible for fraud to the value of around pounds 160,000.

Her barrister told the court she had not shown up because she was in pain, having recently been in hospital.

But Judge Guy Whitburn issued a warrant not backed for bail, meaning when she is arrested she will be held in custody. Prosecutor Carl Gumsley had asked for the warrant during a brief hearing yesterday. Michael Hodson, defending, said: "In her own words from those instructing me, she has had a recent operation and she is in considerable pain and has called the doctor.

"I completely accept the approach my learned friend has taken." Charlton, 25, was expected at Newcastle Crown Court accused of 20 counts of fraud and two of theft. …
