Moore Park Take out Bargara's Big Money

Article excerpt

MOORE Parks Bowls Club men's team of Geoff Hicks, Bob Trudgian, Peter Ives and skip Lee Mason have an extra reason to celebrate Australia Day after winning Bargara Bowls Club's 24th Australia Day Men's Fours last weekend.

With $7000 in prize money, teams travelled from Eton and Sarina in North Queensland, Gladstone, Hervey Bay and Brisbane to join local teams in the two-day event.

Second place went to Bargara's Tom Cummins, Steve Cummins, Kerry Smith and skip Keith Pittaway.

Third place went to a composite team of Peter Peterson, Neil Blackburn, David Blackburn, and Don Orr, from Eton and Sarina (near Mackay) in North Queensland.

The Moore Park team won by seven ends after the six games, and it was current Queensland selector Geoff Hicks' third win in five years.

"I've had a pretty good run personally. I've always won with different teams and this was the first time we have bowled together in fours," he said.

"It was a true team effort. We all played some good and bad ends but someone always stood up when we needed it."

He said it was particularly hard to adjust playing on the unfamiliar carpet greens.

The winning team pocketed $2000 thanks to Ross Gray Holden, Dales Bowling Greens and Bargara IGA, but Hicks did not go spending his winnings all at once.

"The money is nice but winning the tournament is the first and most important thing," he said.

"I gave some of the winnings to my wife - got to get those brownie points up."

Hicks will now ready himself to represent Moore Park in the Clubs Super Challenge event that Tantitha Bowls Club had great success in last year.

Bargara Bowls Club will host another lucrative tournament today.

Many of the travelling bowlers opted to stay in town for today's mixed pairs, which also carries a tempting $1500 price prize.

"It should be another good event carrying on from the weekend and, once again, Casts IGA have got on board to sponsor it," tournament coordinator Jim See said. …
