NOT EVERY Australia Day story has a happy ending.

You can flag that for newlyweds Dawn, 74, and Buddy, 83, Stephens. They woke up on Australia Day to discover the little Aussie flag they had hung outside their second bedroom window the day before had gone.

Burned off its string, actually.

"We couldn't believe it," Dawn said.

"If they'd knocked on the door and asked for it we would have happily given it to them.

"It wasn't an expensive one, just from King Kong (Sales), but we're very proud Australians and this is the first home we've shared since we married on October 11 so Australia Day 2010 was a bit special for us."

Dawn said it couldn't have been kids who stole the flag. "We're not short. I'm 5' 11" and Bud is 5' 10" so whoever took the flag had to reach up a fair height to get it. …
