KANE Mathison was just one of hundreds of Gympie youngsters who put on their uniforms and headed off to school for the first time in 36 degree heat yesterday.

The new prep student sweltered along with another 8150 Year 1s and 8050 Year 8s across Education Queensland's North Coast region, which encompasses Gympie.

Kane has started school at St Patrick's College and, although he was excited, he couldn't wait to get home to his presents a[pounds sterling] yesterday was also his fifth birthday.

Mum and dad, Somer and Tim Mathison, along with grandparents Glenda and Raymond Gould, braved the sun and headed to the school to pick Kane up in the afternoon.

St Patrick's Primary principal Kathy Fuller said the first day back at school had gone off without a hitch, even though it was hot.

Ms Fuller said the kids drank lots of water and made use of new water fountains, but they also had to find new shade areas as construction work was under way at the school. …
