ENVIRONMENT Minister Kate Jones has defended a massive rise in licence fees for small sewage treatment plants that has increased charges to some Sunshine Coast hinterland accommodation operators from $540 to $5400 in a single year.

Ms Jones said the increase was the first in 12 years, and was reasonable because the government did not believe taxpayers should pay for regulation of pollution generated by business.

Clouds of Montville proprietor Angus Richard, one of 11 hinterland tourism operators hit by the fee increases, said he was already paying $3000 a year for testing of the Aqua Nova system that serviced the four cottages and 10 units he operated.

As well, he pays for the regular servicing and maintenance of the system, required because the hinterland does not have mains' sewerage infrastructure.

Mr Richard described the fee increase as ajust a bloody money graba by the government.
