LES MISeRABLES People's Theatre, Newcastle, until tonight KNOWING little about the story and barely able to pronounce its title, this - billed as a 'school edition' - was my introduction to the musical and it was anything but unprofessional.

Performed by students, with Northern Lights Music group, the vocals were outstanding from a dynamic cast, led by Jordon Branthwaite as ex-convict Jean Valjean in the 19th Century-set tale which follows intertwining lives in a post-revolutionary French society. Director Kevin Daley's decision to have an orchestra at back of stage paid off and the set was simple yet versatile.

Throw in a love triangle, a grieving mother and fight for justice and this musical is jam-packed with melody -my only criticism being a hit and miss sound system. From the 'People of the Revolution' to The People's Theatre, this showcase was moving. Many of the audience gave it a standing ovation.
