FOR Andy and Sharny Chapman, Vanuatu is more than a holiday destination a it's a calling.

The teachers will travel to the South Pacific island for a two-year stay with their two children with Mr Chapman working as a principal of a community school in the capital, Port Vila.

Mr Chapman, a former Nambour State School teacher, said Vanuatu had a auser paysa education system which meant many families could only afford to send one child to school.

"Vanuatu education is not free like it is in Australia. You have to pay," he said.

"As a consequence, a family might have five kids and only one can go to school."

He said he would take up the role in a aslum sort of areaa and would train teachers, ideally preparing his replacement so that teaching could continue after the family returned to Australia.

Mrs Chapman said she would work to set up a pre-school in Vanuatu but would not be teaching because students needed to learn from locals. …
