STEVEN TAYLOR is refusing to name a comeback date after seeing his season decimated by knee trouble.

The Newcastle United centreback, however, was today boosted by the news that the knee problem - sustained after a crunching challenge from West Brom's Roman Bednar - will NOT need an operation.

And while Taylor is taking things day by day at the club's Benton base his manager Chris Hughton is privately confident that he could even be back in contention next month.

Hughton is not panicking about Taylor's absence, with pounds 10million defender Fabricio Coloccini, new boy Mike Williamson, loan signing Fitz Hall and Tamas Kadar all capable of life on the first team stage.

Hughton told the Chronicle: "Steven Taylor will be out for a period of time.

"It's his medial ligament. "It certainly doesn't need an operation - it's just going to be a period of rehabilitation and rest.

"I'm still to find to out for exactly how long. …
