CALL TO ACTION Newcastle Falcons' Dave Thompson.

WHEN Dave Thompson spotted North East soldiers collecting charity money on Northumberland Street in Newcastle, he was shocked into action.

Amazed to see members of the Second Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Northern Region collecting money for those injured in battle and the families of those killed in action, Thompson promised his help.

And now he has made good on his word, pledging a slice of the gate receipts from Sunday's Newcastle Falcons Anglo-Welsh Cup clash with Wasps at Kingston Park (kick-off 3pm).

Should the Falcons win, they will also donate their prize money from tournament sponsors LV= insurance. Representatives from the regiment that was formed in 1968 will also be carrying out bucket collections on the night, and Falcons chairman Thompson said it was the least he and the club could do to help.

There might be little to play for where Newcastle are concerned on the day in terms of the specific competition, but Steve Bates' men are playing for their Guinness Premiership places - and now they have this added incentive to help raise as much money as possible for such a clearly worthy cause.

"We couldn't stand by and not help," said Thompson, "because these men are heroes, it's as simple as that.

"I am sure the North East public will join us in paying tribute to a regiment that has such strong links to the region and such a lot of local lads involved.

"We want a big crowd to come in and enjoy a match that should offer some exciting rugby as we look to mix things up and play in an attacking style the way we did down at Cardiff.

"But now we have extra incentive and that's to help raise as much money as we can for the regiment, and we all hope the people of the North East will take this initiative to their heart the way we have at the club. …
