AN iconic cafe that has been operating in Harrisville for more than a century is on the market.

Current owner Jerry Schefe said it was a tough decision to put Mackaways Cafe up for sale but felt he had no choice.

"Since being diagnosed with type one diabetes it has gotten a bit too much for me to be able to work 12 hour days especially when I have children," Mr Schefe said.

He began leasing the popular business with his wife Karen about six years ago and for the qualified chef it has been a dream come true.

"It's a very popular cafe with a lot of history," he said.

"When we took the business on we didn't want to change it because it's always been known as Mackaways Cafe in the community since about 1910."

The father of seven said he has led a busy life in the past few years trying to juggle family and his career but had made the decision with his wife that now was the time to sell. …
