THE need to protect the interests of ratepayers has prompted the Nambucca Shire Council to commission an independent peer review of the noise and vibration section of the environmental assessment for the Warrell Creek to Urunga Pacific Highway upgrade.

At Thursday night's meeting, councillors expressed their fears for the welfare of those people likely to be impacted by excessive noise when the new highway is built.

"Lots of properties will need to be resumed for the highway and their owners will be compensated but I'm particularly worried about those people who will be left to live with the noise generated by the highway," the Nambucca mayor Councillor Rhonda Hoban said.

"The best they can expect is some level of noise abatement such as air-conditioning and double glazing, but as a council we need to ensure they get what they deserve and what is best for them," she said.

Nambucca Council general manager Michael Coulter said it is expected that 181 houses will be affected by excessive noise. …
