THE new Newcastle United was unveiled before our admiring gaze last night.

All six signings in the January sales were thrown together with five old-timers and told to protect United's Championship lead and unbeaten home record.

A back four who must have had to wear name tags to help identification in the dressingroom were pitched against a Cardiff attack officially the most lethal in the division when playing away.

All we needed was the stadium announcer to play Strangers In The Night over the tannoy system and the picture would have been complete!

However, fear not. Within two minutes the latest debut defender Fitz Hall had become a hero - at the other end of the field.

His towering header, way outside the back post from a Danny Guthrie corner, was flicked on by Kevin Nolan for Andy Carroll to notch close in.

Quarter of an hour gone and a shell-shocked Cardiff were out of it!

Three down, they could have set off early on the long trek back to south Wales because the match was beyond them.

Carroll had scored twice and struck a post for unfortunate defender Gabor Gyepes to be so confused he ran the ball into his own net.

Wayne Routledge was the pick of United's half-dozen newcomers.

Pacy, with a touch which occasionally lets him down, he nevertheless played two delightful passes for United's second and fourth goals.

He also stands the ball up well at the back post, inviting powerful headers when penetrating into the box.

However, in the main, a fivegoal victory was fashioned by those to whom we have become accustomed.

Carroll, all alice band and flaying arms, tormented Welsh hearts. Jonas Gutierrez ran them ragged with his quick feet and control.

Danny Guthrie kept the ball moving in central midfield to maintain a good tempo which previously had been missing among laboured legs. …
