AS SOMEONE who occasionally has cause to visit the local fast food outlet, my admiration for the scores of young people who work at these places cannot be overstated.

With due respect to these businesses, the frantic and constant activity of some of our popular dining outlets have some similarities to the sweat shops in Asia.

It is, however, my view that the skills and values that young people can learn from a few years of employment in such environments will put them in good stead for a sound working career. Just have a look next time that it is 'your turn to cook' and the short drive to town seems so much more appealing than an hour in your own kitchen.

How do you think that you would go working in hot, cramped, demanding roles, having instructions barked at you (from both sides of the counter)? The public expectation, fuelled by the zealous marketing divisions of these multinational franchises, conditions us to believe that food must be prepared and delivered within minutes! …
