THE 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water in Northumberland is to be the setting for a new international marathon.

The marathon, on October 17, will follow the recently-completed pounds 3m Lakeside Way multiuser track, with 1,000 runn ers taking part in the first event and plans to expand this to 5,000 in the future.

The Kielder marathon was the idea of Tynesider and former Olympic athlete Steve Cram, who now lives in Northumberland.

The event boosts the target of making Kielder Water and Forest Park a top European outdoor recreation draw, adding to new mountain biking trails, the award-winning Kielder Observatory, the Footfest walking festival in August and September and the relaunched 26-mile Kielder Challenge Walk also in September.

Funding has come from Northumbrian Water and One North East, and Steve said: "With the water's shoreline being 26 miles long it's an ideal venue for the marathon.

"It offers a wonderful test and add to that the stunning setting, with a wonderful new view at every twist and turn, and I think that this is quickly going to establish a reputation as the most beautiful marathon in Britain. …
