Good government can always use more support.

In an era of term limits, good ideas sometimes fall into the desk drawer.

And even with consolidated government, silos sometimes develop between the different branches of government.

Some agencies do a better job with strategic plans, others with evaluations, others with competitive bidding.

Why not share the best practices locally and across the nation?

Those are some of the motives behind an important new project called Foundations of Local Government.

It is based on a model developed at the University of North Carolina.

It was developed and supported by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Florida.

It's a great role for the duPont fund, which supports outstanding initiatives, and a university that is becoming an influential force in the larger community.

Local leaders were coming together last Friday and Saturday for several sessions at UNF.

Partnering with nonprofits, bargaining in the public sector and dealing with the coming state budget were among the workshops.

This is only a start, but it's an excellent one.

A GREAT 25 YEARS

Everywhere you look, you find an outstanding Jacksonville nonprofit agency. For instance, the PACE Center for Girls is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Two people instrumental in the group's success were honored recently:

- Mildred Thompson, a volunteer for 17 years.

- Delores Barr Weaver, whose generosity in our community knows no bounds.

Thompson, received the award posthumously. She and Weaver were heavily involved in the Thompson-Weaver campus in Jacksonville, a news release reported.

Since beginning in Jacksonville in 1985, PACE Center for Girls has expanded to 17 centers in Florida and helped more than 23,000 girls and young women. …
