NSW Clubs Targeted in Talks

THE Queensland-based Bowls Super Challenge (BSC) competition is looking to venture further south across the border and talks next week with NSW clubs could see the competition spreading into northern NSW as early as next year.

At present, the BSC stretches from Cairns in the far north to Kingscliff in the south, but BSC officials will be holding a meeting with a number of other NSW clubs at Pottsville next Thursday.

Clubs interested in the super competition include Ballina, Ocean Shores, Pottsville, Cabarita and Condong.

The Tweed Byron District Association men's and ladies' teams recently played a practice match against Tweed Heads and proved very successful in their "introduction" to the Super Challenge format of Singles, Pairs (one), Pairs (two), Triples and Fours.

It is a simple format with the side winning the best of the five rinks collecting the six match points on offer with an addition of one point for each rink win for a maximum of 11 points.

Not rocket science but with the same number (12) of bowlers as in a pennant side, the BSC format has proven to be more popular than the fours format in pennant competition.

The selectors at a BSC club have a variety of options also.

In preference to the old "lead, second, third and skip" selection method, the selectors have options with established and renowned singles players and well-credentialed pairs combinations.

In the current Gold BSC competition, which features two sections of eight sides with each playing just seven matches, singles players include Ian "Tails" Taylor from Kingscliff, Broadbeach's Sean Baker and Ray Glasser at Paradise Point. Rounding out the section two singles competitors are North Toowoomba's Jason Grundon, Joey Mills from Redlands and Robbie Allan from Mermaid Beach. …
