MILITARY exercises of a sporting kind took place on the playing fields of the Northumberland Rugby Football Union's base at Druid Park.

Future servicemen and women were put through their paces in a highly-successful 10-aside rugby and tag rugby tournament.

Teams from the Northumbria University Officer Training Corps, RAF Boulmer, the Northumbrian Universities Royal Naval Unit, the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme, the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme and Gosforth Rugby Club took part.

Organiser Lieutenant Nelson McMillan said: "The tournament was our way of using sport to project the armed forces in the Northumbrian community as a whole. It was an excellent day out for everyone involved.

"Almost 120 players of both sexes took part and there was a large body of supporters led by Northumberland RFU President Andy Thompson.

"Some of those who were in action will be taking part in the Inter-Universities Royal Naval Unit games at Portsmouth later this month "We will certainly stage our tournament next year - but on a weekend when more North East clubs will have players available."

Northumberland RFU club and coach development officer Tom Wilkinson said: "There was a good standard of rugby on display and everyone involved enjoyed themselves. …
