MIDDLESBROUGH fans will still be able to sleep and drink football - but can now eat parmos - after vendors at the Riverside began selling Teesside's signature dish.

Parmos-in-a-bun are being offered at five outlets around the stadium.

So far this season, there have been 4,000 sold, posing a threat to match-day favourite, the burger.

And Boro FC says the cheese-topped meat feast is doing such a roaring trade, it will be rolled out to two new catering stands in visitor sections.

After tucking into one, Voice of the Boro, commentator Alastair Brownlee said: "It's great to see an essential part of Teesside life is now available to fans at the Riverside.

"After all, Boro and a parmo go together perfectly."

Rob Nichols, editor of Boro fanzine Fly Me To The Moon, has been involved in fan focus groups which make suggestions to the club.

"He said the provision of parmos is an example of how fans can stamp their local identity on their team.

"I think since it's so cold at the moment, it's probably a good thing to serve up to keep people warm," he added.

"Hopefully people will get a bit of extra girth and spread onto some of the spare seats."

And Geoff Thomas of supporters' group Red Faction, said: "It gives the club and the area some identity.

TEAM Ali "We haven't got a lot to feel individual or unique about, especially at the moment, so the club should be given credit for that."

The stadium's concourse supervisor, Sarah Lincoln, said: "The feedback we've had has been hugely positive.

"Because the parmo is essentially a Teesside favourite, the fans identify with it and are proud of it.

Rob "We introduced the parmo for that very reason - to get people talking and to give them an option away from the normal match day fayre."

The parmo is being offered at Newboulds stalls in the North Stand, East Stand and West Stand Upper. …
