Globe Plans Get the Council's Green Light

THE first step in an ambitious vision to bring back a top entertainment venue has been taken after multi-million pound plans were given the green light.

Stockton's Globe Theatre is on its way back up after Stockton Borough Council accepted the development plans submitted by property developer, Jomast.

The decision marks the beginning of a partnership to relaunch The Globe as one of the largest entertainment and performance venues in the North-east.

The Globe opened as a cinema in 1913 but was rebuilt in 1927 and again in 1935. It has hosted stars like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Status Quo.

Plans include the restoration of the external appearance and all major elements of the building, an extension to allow for upgraded new seating, bar, catering and washroom facilities and converting an adjacent vacant property into a modern bar and bistro.

The internal layout will also be largely unchanged in order to maintain the existing space and architectural features. …
