Grants Prove a Big Hit with Young Boxer; Teenage Olympic Hopeful Is One of First to Apply for Cash

A TALENTED young boxer who hopes to fight for Britain in the 2012 Olympics has been chosen as the figurehead for a new grants scheme in her home town.

Carly Wealleans, 18, will find out next month if she has achieved her life's ambition and been selected for the Great Britain women's boxing squad for the London games.

Now she is spearheading a new scheme in her home town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea which will hand out cash grants to local individuals and groups whose efforts in sport, the arts and other fields raise the profile of the coastal community. Carly is one of the first people to apply for support from the pounds 5,000 fund set up by Newbiggin Town Council, which provides handouts of up to pounds 300 per applicant.

Carly, of Avis Avenue, Newbiggin, will take part in two training and assessment camps in Sheffield, and go with the England boxing team to a competition in Germany, before finding out whether she has made the GB squad. …
