When I finished Year 12, which is many years ago, the post-school celebrations seemed far simpler.

All my friends and I did was pack up a friend's ute with all our camping gear and supplies and went camping on the banks of the Murray River for a couple of weeks.

How things have changed over the years. Now when you finish Year 12 you and your friends pack suitcases, grab passports and head to another country.

Today the schoolies market has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry.

There are companies out there where all they do is put packages together that cater for the schoolies market.

Everyone knows that the Gold Coast is considered the Mecca for all things schoolies, but there are many other destinations out there that are only too happy to welcome the young adolescent wanting to have a good time and relax after 13 years of schooling.

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays, with Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and South Molle Island all on its doorstep. …
