Lions Rookie Hoping to Graduate with Honour

HE'S being keenly watched in Japan, is recovering from a training accident and is impressed with new signing Brendan Fevola.

Former Ipswich Grammar School (IGS) student Sean "Yoshi" Yoshiura is loving every minute being a Brisbane Lions rookie.

"It's a great environment and a fantastic atmosphere," Yoshi said at the Gabba yesterday.

And like many Ipswich sporting champions before him, Yoshi is proud of his IGS heritage.

"Without a doubt, everything that I've learnt throughout my life about being a good standard and being responsible and being all those core values . . . the school has helped me heaps," Yoshi said.

"You talk about courage and all those attitudes. Everything came from school."

Yoshi, 18, thanked his former IGS team-mates, his teachers, sports co-ordinator Nigel Greive and IGS deputy headmaster Mike Connors for their support.

Yoshi was IGS school captain in year 12, a fitting honour after years of top-class sporting and academic success.

His highly regarded endurance, being a GPS cross country and 1500m champion for four years, was a factor in the Lions' keenness to offer him a one-year Aussie rules contract this season.

Being born in Japan before coming to Australia aged seven, Yoshi is still being interviewed by the Japanese media who yesterday asked him about his progress.

Yoshi said he wasn't as sharp with his Japanese language as he used to be. But he can still understand it.

"When I came here, I couldn't even speak a single word of English," he laughed.

However, being a fine young man, Yoshi took all yesterday's attention in his stride as he focused on his exciting future.

"As a rookie, I've just got to really develop this year and hopefully I can get a contract next year," the Jindalee-based footballer said.

"I never really thought I'd be picked up last year (December). …
