If there are cobwebs on your mower and a jungle where your lawn used to be, you'd better prepare now to cut a swathe through the thicket.

After receiving almost 100 complaints about overgrown allotments in January, Mackay Regional Council is preparing for a serious crackdown.

Health and regulatory services manager Neil Ischenko said there had been 96 complaints about overgrown allotments in January a almost twice the number recorded during the same month last year.

Some blocks of land had grass that towered more than six feet high.

aWith the wet weather, more and more allotments have been allowed to become overgrown,a Mr Ischenko said.

aWe received 53 complaints about overgrown allotments in December and 96 in January.

aThere are also others that we know about (that council hasn't received complaints about).

aWe find quite a number of repeat offenders, particularly on spare blocks of land where the owner doesn't live in this area. …
