THERE are many moments in our lives when the only thing that can help us is a hug.

It doesn't matter how long the hug lasts, there is a healing power in the human touch.

Last week, I hugged a complete stranger. This woman was grieving from a terrible tragedy.

I don't know why I felt the need to hug her but there was a thump in my heart that jolted me to embrace her.

Even though the hug lasted a few seconds, I hoped that my gesture of condolence helped her feel the warmth of kindness.

As a journalist, I have had difficulty sometimes turning off the flood of emotions that come with certain stories I write.

There are some days when certain people or events pull at your heart strings and you can't help but feel the strain of what fellow human beings endure.

It is a tricky call, whether you should put on your 'big heart' hat or your professional reporter's hat.

Many in the profession may believe that distancing yourself from the story may give you clarity of events, deciding that an emotional link can cause a misty view. …
