Head to Maryborough's Wharf Street on a Sunday for lunch. They call it Portside and it was fourth in RACQ's poll of Queensland's top 150 must-dos. Portside has a rare ambience, delectable food and excellent museums.


Sunday's Hervey Bay markets alternate between Urangan and Nikenbah. The weekly affair has lots of colour, lots of bargains, lots of fresh, cheap plants and friendly locals.


The Hideaway Hotel in Tiaro is good for a jar and local company.


Maryborough's World's Greatest Pub Crawl, which is done very smartly with an alcohol-free thrust and dressing up aspect, is a joy. Book in with us for June 2009.


The Bay's Esplanade, which you can walk or bike it for as long as you want. It runs from Urangan to Point Vernon.


The monthly Ghostly Tours in Maryborough are professionally presented and a real insight into the Heritage City's past.


Visit Dugamin, also called Scrub Hill, on the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road, just as you come into Hervey Bay. The Butchulla Aboriginal community farm does terrific things in organic nursery work and artefacts.


Brooklyn House in Howard is worth a tour and scones and tea. Dame Annabelle Rankin lived there. Also check out the Grand Hotel in town, where you'll find great atmosphere and food.


Chill out on the back veranda of the Hervey Bay Boat Club, a plum spot to share a drink and enjoy the view.


Meet Maryborough's Mary, Carmel Murdoch. What a woman! Carmel acts many Marys - Poppins, Christmas, Widow are some - depending on the event and the time of year.


I confess. I have a favourite club and it's the Hervey Bay RSL. They do extremely unique things like running an in-club counselling service and giving back so much to the community. Plus, the tucker is superb.
