JOS[ETH] Enrique will step up his recovery from a hamstring injury next week, but the Spaniard's imminent return will not necessarily signal the end of Patrick van Aanholt's loan spell on Tyneside.

Left-back Enrique has blossomed in this season's Championship, turning into the player Sam Allardyce always hoped he would when paying pounds 6.5m to bring him from La Liga side Villarreal.

A hamstring pull at the end of last month has kept him oS ut of the first-team picture ever since, but the 24-year-old is expected back on the Darsley Park training pitches on Monday.

With today's Championship visit of Preston North End due to be the penultimate match of van Aanholt's loan from Chelsea, and the Blues a left-back light after Ashley Cole's broken ankle, everything would seem to have slotted into place perfectly. But Chris Hughton is keen to keep the Dutchman on Tyneside, and claims reports he will be recalled are news to him.

"We're hoping Jos will start training on Monday," the Newcastle boss revealed. "Patrick has two more games left. We have to make a decision about Patrick, it's not as simple as Jos coming back and him going. Officially, his loan period finishes after Watford.

"We haven't spoken to Chelsea about the loan situation yet, we've just spoken to them about his game and his performances. We will make decisions over the next week on how we address that situation.

"The loan period is for a month, but it can be extended. We haven't spoken to Chelsea yet though, so we don't want to jump the gun. We'll assess that after the game this weekend." Hughton has been impressed with van Aaholt's contributions, replacing not only the Spaniard's defensive qualities but also the attacking thrust he provided down the flanks. …
