A DISTRAUGHT woman sparked panic when she threatened to blow up her home while she was inside.

Elderly residents and families from three streets surrounding the potential explosion site had to be evacuated as emergency plans were swiftly put in place.

Gemma Nicholson made a phone call at 3pm on October 28 last year threatening to blow up her house in Wylam Street, Craghead, County Durham.

Hours earlier the 26-year-old had turned on the gas of her cooker and used weights to make sure the flow continued when she left the building.

Sharon Lowrie told Consett Magistrates yesterday: "This caused a large degree of mayhem and distress to all these people living around the area. The cost to the public purse was significant."

Nicholson, now living in Church Road, Blackhill, County Durham, rang a women's refuge saying what she planned to do.

Mrs Lowery added: "She said she was outside her house, it was full of gas, and she was going to go back inside light a match and blow it up. …
