Magpies Look to Build on Road Win

KEVIN Nolan feels the only people who have not been worried about Newcastle United's away form are the players, although he admitted the Magpies need to build on the 2-1 win at Watford. That victory last weekend was Newcastle's first on the road since beating Coventry at the start of December as they became overly reliant on their excellent home record.

Newcastle remain unbeaten at St James' Park in all competitions this season, but Nolan conceded it was important they picked up three points on their travels as they look to maintain an eight point gap between themselves and third-placed Nottingham Forest.

United have had to endure being the team everyone wants to beat this season, and Nolan believes they have generally acquitted themselves well in the eye of the storm.

He said: "Everyone is always battering on about it, but we have not thought about it.

"I know that is a bit weird, because our home form has been really good.

"To go away from home in this league, there is going to be a full crowd, it is going to be intense and to get four draws and only lose one in the last five is not bad.

"To finally get the win is nice and it breeds a bit more confidence, but fair play to them - they gave as good as they got. It was a well-contested game and fortunately we came out on top."

Newcastle will have plenty more uncomfortable afternoons and evenings away from home between now and May, and Mike Williamson agreed with Nolan on how they have to approach them.

The Magpies still have to navigate their way through potentially tricky trips to Middlesbrough, Doncaster, Peterborough, Bristol City, Plymouth and Queens Park Rangers, but Williamson is confident his new team have developed the necessary qualities to cope.

He said: "We have not been looking at records. We have just been trying to push on and win regardless of what run we have been on. …
