AN old rocker and award-winning actor has become the unlikely face of the campaign to save the Bellingen Hospital.

Frankie J Holden, famous for his band Ol' 55 and roles in TV series such as Underbelly, Prisoner and Police Rescue will chair a meeting in Kempsey on Sunday where representatives from country communities will air their concerns about State and Federal funding of small rural hospitals.

The entertainer lives on the State's South Coast and is involved in the fight to save the Pambula Hospital which, like the Bellinger River District Hospital, is under threat of having its service capabilities downgraded

"While my interest in this issue has begun where I live, but as I got more involved, I realised the extent of the problem," Mr Holden said

"Rural communities across the State are being decimated through the callous, calculated and thoughtless actions of politicians and bureaucrats. It's time we stood up for ourselves. …
