Cattle Duffers Active; Farmers Frustrated by Losses

IT is not the wild west, it is just Piggabeen.

Farmers in the area say cattle rustling is rampant, but have had little success in bringing the offenders to justice.

According to stud owner Jan Fletcher, most of the culprits get away with the thefts because they easily hide the cattle on large properties.

"It is an ongoing problem; it has been going on for years and years. I have had lots of losses that have hit really hard.

"Sometimes I manage to get them back - I managed to get two heifers back a few years ago.

"I actually slept with our steers after losing our best steer from the holding paddock the night before they were loaded, three years in a row."

Another Piggabeen grazier recently lost six angus cattle worth thousands of dollars.

The experience of trying to investigate the thefts has left Mrs Fletcher disillusioned with the police response.

"We need to look at fast and effective policing, because this is affecting people's livelihoods. …
