Bypass Funds Dry Up for Walkerston

YOU only have to see bumper-to-bumper traffic flow through Dutton Street in Walkerston to know that it is chaotic.

For years this street has been an issue of concern and safety for Walkerston residents, who have had to put up with the stream of semi-trailers and trucks that fly past.

In 2007 and 2008 Queensland Transport and Main Roads investigated traffic flows through and around the township of Walkerston.

During this process, the department engaged extensively with the community and key stakeholders, including the Mackay Regional Council.

This led to the recommendation of a preferred route for the future bypass of Walkerston.

However according to a Main Roads spokesperson the department is currently liaising with Mackay Regional Council to gazette the future bypass route as a future state-controlled road.

"This will allow it to be considered as a state-controlled road for the purpose of planning for future land development.

"While funding is available to undertake a detailed design

stage of the bypass alignment, there is currently no funding available for construction of the Walkerston bypass. …
