High-Flying Brown Does It All for ACD; Senior Forward Will Try to Lead the Apaches to Their Sixth Title in a Row

Arlington Country Day basketball coach Rex Morgan will sometimes watch senior John Brown make one spectacular play after another, leaving Morgan shaking his head and wondering how good Brown could have been had he played basketball throughout high school.

The soaring 6-foot-8 forward will join his teammates in Lakeland at when ACD meets Summit Christian in a Class 1A state semifinal game at 10 a.m. today. A win by the Apaches will send them to the championship game Thursday, when ACD could become the first school in FHSAA history to win six consecutive state basketball titles.

After winning the past five 2A crowns, ACD moved to 1A status this year when enrollment dropped from the previous year. If the Apaches are to make it six in a row, they'll likely have to end the dominance of Orlando Christian Prep which has won the past two Class 1A state titles. OCP will meet Grandview Prep in the game immediately following ACD-Summit Christian.

In order for Arlington Country Day to break the tie it currently holds with Malone for consecutive state championships, Brown will have to play a big role.

He's averaged around 12 points and close to 10 rebounds a game this season. But it's the intensity and emotion that he plays with that distinguish him.

And he's developed it in less than two years of playing basketball in high school.

"I was a quarterback my first two years [at First Coast]," said Brown, who was 6-3 as a sophomore. "They kept asking me to play basketball, but I wanted to concentrate on football."

The summer following his sophomore season, Brown grew 3 inches. He also transferred to Jackson. He was spotted in the gym shooting baskets by then-Jackson coach Creswell Foy, who convinced Brown to give basketball a try. Brown agreed, played as a junior and then transferred to ACD for his senior season. …
