RUGBY UNION: The Mackay rugby union season kicks off this weekend with a pre-season 10 a side completion in which clubs will compete for a $2000 prize pool.

The first round of 10s kicks off at 12.30pm today at Cathy Freeman Oval, Slade Point, with a replay of last year's pre-season final between Brothers and Kuttabul.

The 10s will play rounds at each clubs' respective home ground with a finals series being played at Quarry Hill on April 17 before the regular season kicks off on May 8.

The program has been extended to five weekends with Hamilton Island fielding a side and three women's games being played at each Mackay fixture.

The 10s is shaping up for a good start to the MDRU completion with the women's 10s seen as a stepping stone to a fully fledged women's competition over the next couple of seasons.

It is hoped to expand the women's comp to four teams before the regular season starts in May and grows to a full 15 a side competition as numbers improve. …
