We were horrified to read in the Chronicle that the Fraser Coast Regional Council would even consider downsizing the Olympic-sized swimming pool in Maryborough.

Swimming was a way of life for our family for almost 20 years and it was wonderful to see the dedicated children and their families leading such a healthy lifestyle and fantastic to see that families are still continuing to enjoy swimming, either competitive or social, with all the distractions that are present today.

To be competitive you must have a 50-metre swimming pool close enough for children/young adults to attend training twice a day, before and after school, attend club nights and carnivals and do their required school studies.

Most children have a parent to take them to training but some have to ride their bikes or walk.

If Maryborough loses its Olympic-sized pool and swimmers are expected to continue their training at Hervey Bay it would be impossible for any of them to continue.

If they did try the Hervey Bay pool would be overcrowded - would they then need a second Olympic pool? …
