Blow to Cameron as Tebbit Tells Tories Not to Vote for Speaker

LORD TEBBIT sparked Tory fears that he could disrupt their general election plans today after he hinted at support for Ukip and criticised Lord Ashcroft.

The former Conservative party chairman defied David Cameron by hinting that Tory voters should support Ukip leader Nigel Farage in his battle against the Speaker John Bercow.

In another jibe that will be unwelcome to Mr Cameron, the former Cabinet minister also criticised party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft for failing to come clean over his finances.

Lord Tebbit has become increasingly critical of the Cameron approach to politics, attacking a reliance on focus groups.

As one of Margaret Thatcher's key lieutenants in the Eighties, his views are closely monitored by party strategists who fear that he could send the wrong signal to millions of loyal Tory voters thinking of flirting with Ukip.

Mr Cameron has recently given his strong backing for Mr Bercow, who is a former Conservative MP but will be fighting for his Buckingham seat as an independent. …
