LIFE'S Been Hectic Recently, So [...]

LIFE'S been hectic recently, so I'm probably one of the last people to have visited St Andrew's Way, the new extension to Eldon Square in Newcastle. But seeking inspiration for a friend's birthday present I took a few minutes off work and headed there one day this week. The mall is light and bright, with a good feeling of space - I'm beginning to sound like an estate agent these days!

I opted for jewellery and went into one shop to look at the displays. I soon decided upon a particular bracelet and I stood and waited. And sto od and waited. Several other would-be customers came and waited. But the only assistant to be seen was busy carrying boxes and didn't even look in our direction.

One woman and I watched as ans other potential customer tried on rings. She could have walked off with a ring on every finger and no one would have noticed! After some minutes we all abandoned our mission and went to shop elsewhere.

Perhaps I'm old-fashioned and set too much store by customer service. …
