UNIVERSITY of Southern Queensland (USQ) Vice-Chancellor's Principal's Recommendation Scholarship recipient Sharishma Chand is a great example of how hard work and personal belief can bring great success.

The former Redbank Plains State High School student has proven economic hardship and cultural difficulties can be overcome and is looking toward a bright future with the scholarship, with a maximum value of $24,500.

Ms Chand said her success could be attributed to a personal truth she discovered in her early high school years - that the only limitations she had were those she chose to impose on herself.

"I was born in Fiji and moved to Cairns with my family in 2008, before settling in Bellbird Park in 2009," Ms Chand said.

"Watching my parents struggling and working long hours to support my education has been all the inspiration I have needed to study and attain good results."

After overcoming the challenge of a foreign high school environment, Sharishma quickly found her feet and turned her academic results from Cs to As. …
