Cyclone Brings Suffering to Fiji; but Here, Surfers Are Anticipating Swell Waves

IT'S an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

So while Fiji suffers from the effects of Cyclone Tomas and Queensland braces for the impact of Tropical Cyclone Ului, North Coast surfers are looking forward to big swells this week, and the State's farmers are revelling in recent widespread heavy rain.

Bryce Cameron, president of Byron Bay Boardriders, said the big waves should begin hitting the Northern Rivers by this afternoon and will peak on Saturday.

"We get an event like this every summer, but not as significant," Mr Cameron said.

World circuit surfer Danny Wills said he expected things to get exciting by tomorrow.

"It should be really solid, and could be the biggest I've ever seen here," he said.

And where would he suggest surfers go?

"I'll have a look at Kirra," he said. "Otherwise in front of the clubhouse on Main Beach at Byron Bay."

He was looking forward to the possibility that it could get 'extremely big, say up to 5m', he said. …
