CHAIRMAN Alan McKenna and new captain Marc Symington have hailed the signing of Gary Scott as Northumberland's new professional.

Scott joined Northumberland as an amateur having previously played for Durham, where he played 17 first-class games and 29 one-dayers.

The Sunderland-born stroke-maker scored three Championship centuries, including an unbeaten 176 against Cumberland, for North last summer, averaging an impressive 73.7.

Still just 24 and harbouring hopes of a return to the professional game, Northumberland have acted quickly to elevate Scott to the paid ranks.

McKenna said: "Scott had a great season last year and scored some big runs.

"Other Minor Counties were alerted by his performances, so it is good to get him tied down for 2010.

"He can also offer something with the ball and is at an age where he still has the majority of his career to go."

Symington, like Scott, discarded by Durham after coming through the ranks at the Riverside, is delighted to keep the hard-hitting batsman on board. …
