Ruby Now Leading Jockey at Showpiece

RUBY Walsh created Cheltenham Festival history with his triumph on Sanctuaire in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap Hurdle.

It was the jockey's 26th winner at the showpiece meeting - one ahead of the tally of Pat Taaffe, the rider of the legendary Arkle.

Walsh could hardly have ridden Sanctuaire, the 4-1 favourite, with more confidence - anchoring him nearer the back of the field and gradually picking off his rivals on the outer coming down the hill.

Walsh enjoyed the luxury of taking a pull rounding the homeward turn, and when setting his mount alight it became the proverbial procession, Sanctuaire nine lengths clear of Notus De La Tour.

Trainer Paul Nicholls said: "Ruby was very keen on this horse when he won at Taunton and although he had a few little problems when he came over from France, all of a sudden the penny dropped.

"None of us really knew how good he was and after this he can't run in another handicap, so it will probably be the juvenile hurdle at Aintree next. …
