Admiral Says Diplomacy Will Win Afghanistan; the Head of U.S. Forces in Europe Spoke at a World Affairs Council Lecture

For the United States to accomplish its security goals, it has to focus as much on things like strategic communications and economic development as it does on military might, the military commander of NATO and head of U.S. forces in Europe said Tuesday.

"We can't focus on launching Tomahawk missiles. We have to be in the business of launching ideas," Adm. James Stavridis told a full house at a World Affairs Council lecture.

Stavridis came to the lecture at the University of North Florida shortly after spending several days testifying on Capitol Hill where he touched on many of the same topics.

His position as head of the two related commands, he said, allow him to build a bridge between America and Europe. Each views security issues very differently, with Europeans being more likely to opt for diplomatic approaches, in part because of their history. "Europeans know war," he said.

Nevertheless, the fight in Afghanistan is a major area of focus for the allies, who have about half of the number of troops that the United States has in that country, he said. …
