DUE to an odd and frustrating regulation, tomorrow will be one of the saddest days in Tallegalla resident Dr Vivian Edward's life.

Dr Edwards is being forced to retire as president of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) because he turns 72 this year.

The RNA, the body which governs the Ekka, rules state its president cannot be older than 72 so Dr Edwards must retire tomorrow at the group's annual general meeting.

"It's a very sad week for me," Dr Edwards said.

"I wish the rule wasn't there because I would love to continue as president especially because there is so much change ahead of us.

"But that's the rule so I have no choice."

In the next few years, the RNA Showgrounds in Bowen Hills will be transformed into a retail, residential and commercial precinct, which will enable the site to be used throughout the year, not just when the Ekka is on. …
