QUEENSLAND'S favourite banana picker turned full-time guitar picker, 8 Ball Aitken, has been announced as a finalist in the International Song Writing Competition.

The winner will be announced in April.

His song Yellow Moon is a finalist in the blues category, while Cowboy Movie is a semi-finalist in the country category.

The International Song Writing Competition, which has about 15,000 entrants worldwide, is judged by a panel of American industry professionals and hit songwriters.

Aitken lived in Ipswich until 1994 before moving to Mareeba in North Queensland.

He said his musical style was influenced by life, Australia and the bush.

"A lot of the things I've done growing up in the bush, and there are stories about relationships between people - that's what's of interest to me... and writing songs about hurt and things you've observed in life," Aitken said.

The former Dinmore Primary School captain nearly did not become a musician after spending his teen years working as a banana picker in North Queensland. …
