EVERYONE has a bad day now and then. Life wouldn't be life without such days, but you can learn from them, improve and move on.

Callum and I ventured to Pizza Express a few weeks ago and, very unusually with this chain of restaurants, the meals were not up to the usual standard.

Whenever we head off on a jaunt somewhere, if there is a Pizza Express at our destination we seek it out. We always feel you can rely on the company to deliver first-rate Italian food with a service to match.

It had been several years since we had eaten at Newcastle's original Pizza Express on Dean Street and, with a theatre production to look forward to up the road, we decided to pay it a visit.

Something just wasn't right on the night, though, and the meals were somewhat substandard - and parts of the menu weren't even available.

As I said, we all have our off days. So we decided to give the restaurant another go - it was, after all, the venue we had our first meal together, so it had fond memories for us.

I'm glad to say, on our return trip, things were back to normal. That off day hopefully was just that - a one-off.

We decided to have the same as the previous visit to contrast and compare - but there was no comparison. This time around the meals were spot-on and left us with smiles on our faces.

To kick off proceedings we ordered a bottle of Consumano, Sicilia (pounds 12.95) which, while fruity, still retained that all-important dryness.

For starters, Callum had the bruschetta con funghi (pounds 4.45), Portobello and closed cup mushrooms, cream, bchamel sauce, red onions, parsley and a dash of balsamic vinegar. It is his favourite PE starter, and as usual he was more than happy with the result.

I chose plain old garlic bread (pounds 2.55), which was oozing with the smelly stuff, while not being greasy in the slightest. …
